In Melbourne, money alone doesn’t talk

The seductive strip of white-sand beach and blue water that now holds the title of Victoria’s most expensive property started out with poor prospects. When a group of British settlers and convicts first reached the site, in 1803, they soon declared it treacherous and inhospitable and shipped off further south after only seven months.

Today’s settlers obviously think better of Sullivan Bay, near the village of Sorrento in southeastern Australia - particularly the 1.2-hectare, or 3-acre, beachfront property that sold in April for about 18.4 million Australian dollars, or $17.6 million, a state record for a residential deal.
