Canberra’s rental crisis eases

A property research group says Canberra’s rental vacancy rates have eased and the worst of the national capital’s rental crisis is over.

New figures show the vacancy rate is 1.1 per cent - up from last year’s rate of 0.3 per cent.

SQM research managing director, Louis Christopher, says a year ago there were almost 120 vacant properties in Canberra and now there are nearly 500.

“We know the market is super-sensitive,” he said.

“The numbers are still relatively tight, so if there was any slight change in demand, for example would-be homebuyers holding off on buying a property and renting instead, that could certainly see vacancy rates come down again.

“So we’re watchful of that but at this point in time I think we can safely say that it is starting to ease.”
